Philip Leeson Architects were approached by our clients for this knockdown-rebuild project in Yarralumla with a clear, functional brief as well as specific ideas around the form and materials they wished to be included in their project. The living wing, including kitchen and dining spaces, has extensive northern sun for passive heating in winter and is directly accessible from the rear patio and yard. The bedroom wing forms the front and main street address with its 2-storey form. From the front wing, there are also views from each room to the mature parkland beyond.

With a tiled gable roof and double brick lower storey, the traditional architectural form is given an extra layer of delight with the use of timber in the facade. There are timber-lined soffits to the entry porch, a timber entry deck, and cedar battens on the garage door and entry windows, as well as on the 2 vertical blades on the front facade.

The patio in the rear yard has a pergola with deciduous vines in the early stages of growth. Ultimately it is intended that the vines provide additional shade across the pergola in summer and allows the sun deep into the living spaces in winter.
